Did you ever wonder what happens to our Meals on Wheels customers on holidays, or snow days, or even just on weekends? Milestone Senior Services provides Home Delivered Meals, (or Meals on Wheels) each weekday except for holidays and emergency closings. To give you some idea of what a vital program this is, last year, Milestone provided 334,205 home delivered meals for 2,485 older adults and adults with disabilities throughout Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties. So, you might be wondering, what happens on those days when Milestone does not deliver? Don’t worry – we’ve got it covered, and this is how we do it . . .
In the event of a scheduled closing, such as a holiday, we provide people with additional food to carry people over the planned closing. For major holidays, our chefs will often prepare a special holiday meal that wouldn’t be in our regular rotation. These are frozen meals and are delivered the day before the closing/holiday.
Because Meals on Wheels is such a vital service to so many people, our agency is hesitant to close due to weather or other emergency situations, but sometimes we have to. In addition to our clients’ needs, we have to consider the safety of our people behind those wheels delivering the meals – most of whom are volunteers. To accommodate emergency closings, each Meals on Wheels client is provided with a supply of shelf-stable and nutritionally balanced meals that are designated to be used in case of an emergency closing. Once the emergency is over (usually one day) and we are back to delivering, we replenish the emergency supply so that they should never be without a backup.
We know how important our services are to our clients, which is why we make sure we’ve got you covered, even when we can’t be there!
