Sometimes a simple grab-bar is all it takes to keep someone safe at home.
Milestone Senior Services’ Home Repair department provides minor home repairs as well as safety and accessibility modifications so that older adults and adults with disabilities may remain living safely and independently at home with access to their community. Many older adults and adults with disabilities live on a fixed income and fall within the threshold of low-income. Often, they do not have the resources to hire contractors for repairs or accessibility features needed to ensure they are safe at home. Left unaddressed, this can lead to injuries, hospitalization, and a path toward a life of isolation. A fall can trigger a series of events that may result in declining health and a loss of independence. According to the Administration for Community Living, more than 75% of falls take place at home and most are preventable with some basic modifications to make the home safer and more accessible for people with limited mobility.
No matter how small a repair or modification may seem, the impact to the person served, is significant. A simple grab bar in someone’s bathroom can provide a level of independence and dignity everyone wants for themselves. On the other end of the spectrum, providing a ramp on a home for someone with mobility disabilities provides them with access to their community.
Our Home Repair program performs home safety assessments, minor home repairs, barrier-free/accessibility modifications, and construction of entry ramps. These services can make the difference between living at home or having to relocate to a nursing facility.
