Michelle is no stranger to Milestone Senior Services – she was a volunteer for Milestone years ago. At the end of last year, Michelle started having difficulty walking and was falling more frequently. She was eventually diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma which was growing around the muscles in her leg and hip. Since then, she has received chemotherapy and her cancer is now in remission, however she still has difficulty with stability and uses a walker. Michelle reached out to Milestone to have grab bars and toilet frames installed in her bathroom.
When our Home Repair Tech was there to install the grab bars, Michelle mentioned that, although she has a car, she had not left the house in the past two months because she was not able to safely use the steps in front of her home. She had fallen on the steps several times and was afraid to leave or thought she might not be able to get back in.
Our Tech told her to call our office to apply for a ramp, which she did. Since she was already a customer, we had her information on file and by the next day Michelle was approved for a ramp. Our staff came out and took some measurements a couple of days later and the following week, Michelle had a ramp!
Michelle was so excited to be able to leave the house. She couldn’t wait to go visit her grandchildren who live in Allegan – they are the reason she moved to Michigan. Michelle’s voice cracked as she said, “I feel so blessed. I couldn’t have done this myself – I couldn’t afford it.”
Milestone Senior Services is here to help older adults and adults with disabilities, just like Michelle, to be able to remain living at home safely and with an improved quality of life. What could be better than being able to visit with your grandkids after months of being afraid to leave your house?!
