Michigan winters are no joke. Creating a safe and prepared environment is vital for avoiding the dangers that come with the cold temperatures. Here are six tips to keep you safe during the winter season.
If you drive, create a safety kit to keep in your car. Blankets, hand warmers, flashlight, jumper cables, and non-perishable food and water are a few things to keep with you in case of emergency.
Should you need to go outside, dress appropriately! Dressing in layers will make it easy to adjust to your changing temperatures and keep you insulated. Make sure you are wearing proper shoes in case of icy conditions. Adding shoe spikes can help add even more traction while walking.
Be prepared for power outages with supplies such as non-perishable food and bottled water, a battery powered radio, candles or a battery powered lantern, warming devices and blankets, and a charged battery pack to keep any devices charged and ready to go
Keep sidewalks, walkways, and driveways snow free, but use caution shoveling/plowing yourself. Go slow and take your time, taking breaks to go inside to rest and warm up to avoid injury. If you are unable to do this physical work, connect with a neighbor or loved one ahead of time to see if they can help clean up the snow. You might offer to pay them with a batch of cookies or a bowl of soup.
Be aware of any weather alerts by using your television, radio, or smartphone to keep watch on developing or changing conditions.
Make sure all necessary medications are filled and up to date, as well as staying current with any needed vaccines
