Michigan is a great place to be in the autumn – the sunny days with cool crisp temperatures, fresh apple cider, and beautiful fall colors! It is also the perfect time to start planning for what comes next.

Taking proactive steps before the cold weather gets here can help older adults remain safe, healthy, and independent throughout the winter months. Grab a pen and paper and map a plan for your winter preparation. You can organize your list in two categories – your self-care needs and your home’s needs.

Winter Self-Care Prep

  • Weather & Emergency Info – Make sure you have a good go-to source for local weather and emergency information. Consider purchasing a power pack for longer power outages so you don’t lose communication. Keep a list of emergency contacts in a handy place where you and others can easily access it.
  • Stock Your Pantry – Purchase a supply of shelf-stable food in case you can’t get out or there is a power outage. If you are concerned about accessing food during the winter, look into Meals on Wheels during the winter months.
  • Stock Other Supplies – Make sure your prescriptions are filled. Purchase an assortment of batteries in the house and make sure you have a good flashlight.
  • Evaluate Your Wardrobe – Make sure you have sufficient winter clothing for both inside and outside. Don’t forget about your feet and your hands – keep them warm and dry!
  • Indoor Activities – Make a plan for how you will enjoy your time at home if you can’t get out – whether that’s finding on-line classes or stocking up on your books and yarn – whatever you enjoy doing at home, get what you need ahead of time.

Winter Home Prep

  • Evaluate Your Entrance – If you have stairs, make sure they are in good condition with a safe handrail. Consider adding a non-slip surface to your entrance where ice may occur. Put a bag of snowmelt near your entrance and walk before the ice and snow get here.
  • Winterization –Checking for drafts – you may need to insulate some windows or doors. Have your heating system inspected and evaluated before winter sets in.
  • Minor Home Repairs – If there are any repairs around your home, get them scheduled now and don’t wait until the winter months arrive when it might be harder to get people out to do the work.
  • Safety Check – Make sure your smoke and CO2 detectors are in place, have fresh batteries, and are operating properly. Replace any burned out light bulbs and have some replacements in stock.
