Welcome to Michigan summertime!  Forget about the snow and ice and enjoy the great outdoors! But let’s face it, the summer heat can be brutal too. This is especially true for older adults who may be more sensitive to heat related issues. Here are some tips to help Beat the Heat!

  • Use proper sun protection to prevent sun burn. Make sure you apply sunscreen on any exposed body parts, reapplying at least every 2 hours.
  • Stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you and take sips frequently. In intense heat, or if you are doing a lot of activity, try adding electrolytes or drinking a sports drink to increase your hydration.
  • Let your clothes keep you cool. Wear a hat and other sun protective clothes to limit UV exposure. You can also wet a hand towel or rag with cool water and place it on your wrists or back of your neck to cool down.
  • Timing makes a difference. If you are doing work or activity outside, try to schedule it for the cooler morning and evening hours. Take frequent and sufficient breaks to escape the heat and hydrate.
  • Keep your home cool. If you can cool down our house overnight, close it up during the day to maintain the temperature. Closing your blinds and curtains will help keep your home cooler and increase the efficiency of your AC or fans.

We hope these tips help you better enjoy your Michigan summer! If you are ever feeling unwell after spending time in the sun, make sure you consult a medical professional to prevent serious injury.
